About the White Paper:
Linux running on IBM eServer zSeries servers has brought new meaning to the term server consolidation. The zSeries platform has long been recognized for the ability to scale to support consolidation of diverse workloads onto zSeries servers. In the past this was typically "vertical" scaling, or put another way, getting a more powerful processor to contain the workloads of less powerful processors. Linux adds another dimension to that. Now with z/VM running on a zSeries processor, "horizontal" consolidations are possible.
This white paper supplies technical architects with the methods the IBM Linux Scalability Center used to implement a 1,000 guest server consolidation solution using z/VM and Linux for zSeries on the IBM eServer zSeries hardware platform. Also discussed are the behavior characteristics of server farms under a variety of workload conditions and network topologies, and recommendations and suggestions where appropriate, relative to configuring a similar network. Both theoretical and practical technical details are included. It is not the purpose of this document to provide performance information. |
