Description:
At LinuxWorld in New York City, a new company -- Chestnut Hill, Mass.-based Black Duck Software, Inc. -- introduced a timely new product: Black Duck Enterprise Edition for automated software intellectual property (IP) risk management.
The new Black Duck soltion promises to help corporations manage and mitigate software development IP risks. The software has features that enable a company's legal counsel to quickly identify and validat proprietary software, open source software and combinations of the two, for internal or commercial use. This enables companies to conceptualize new projects, develop violation-free software and pass software audits. Black Duck's product can help developers realize the benefits of reusing code repositories, and mitigates the related risks of copyright infringement and license violation. Currently there are more than 60 Open Source licenses in use, with more released each month, which adds to the complexity of license management. Black Duck's software is continuously updated to reflect new Open Source as well as commonly used proprietary licenses.
"Our enterprise software can be used by many different people with in a corporation, by people who do and do not have legal expertise and do or do not have development expertise," said Douglas A. Levin, president and CEO of Black Duck Software, in an interview with SearchEnterpriseLinux.com. "Black Duck can be used during the planning of projects and systems, the reviewing of software licenses, and many other situations."
Geared toward multifunctional teams in development organizations, Black Duck's Enterprise Edition integrates into the software development cycle at the conceptualization stage and offers support throughout the source code development process including code review, publishing or distribution and software audits. Black Duck Enterprise integrates with the Concurrent Versions System, better known as CVS, the dominant open-source version control system, and the Eclipse Platform for source code management.
