DEFINITION - Firestarter is an open source firewall program for personal computers and servers that support Linux kernels 2.4 and 2.6.

Firestarter can be installed on individual computers or servers and can be managed remotely using Secure Shell (SSH). The server administrator can adjust Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) and Terms of Service (ToS) parameters to minimize the risk of denial of service (DOS) attacks while also optimizing the services available to client computers. Inbound and outbound access parameters can be defined independently. Other particulars are also user adjustable, such as defining open ports and stealth ports, creating blacklists and whitelists, and hooking up specific scripts before or after the firewall is activated.
