Virtualization for Linux servers

GOLD AWARD: XenEnterprise 4.0
Citrix Systems Inc. XenEnterprise 4.0 isn't a halfhearted virtualization project: it's an ambitious, full-featured open source platform that virtualizes a variety of Linux distributions, exploits the latest server hardware advancements, integrates with industry-standard storage and backup products, and does so with impressive performance.
But when it came time to select a Gold winner for this category, XenEnteprise stood out from the competition by its ease of use. Simply put, "XenSource makes it really easy to get virtualization up and running," wrote one of our judges. To that end, XenSource is installed with either a CD or network-based installation, and it can be used to virtualize enhanced, "paravirtualized" Linux distributions, or native, unmodified distributions assuming that servers are equipped with virtualization-enhanced x86 processors.
XenEnterprise doesn't play favorites with Linux. Despite its open source roots, XenEnterprise virtualizes Windows operating systems equally well. In fact, its virtual machines are built on Microsoft's Virtual Hard Disk (VHD) format and are compatible with an increasing number of virtual appliances coming to market.
Citrix XenEnterprise also makes it easy on the IT budget to try out virtualization. In addition to the 64-bit hypervisor, XenEnterprise v4 comes with XenMotion live migration and XenCenter management as standard features and retails for $1,599 for an annual subscription license per dual socket server, or $2,499 perpetual license per dual socket server.
