GOLD AWARD: Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 (RHEL 5) gets the Gold award in the Linux Server Distributions category for its embrace of open source Xen virtualization and additional production-level features.
In this full-featured release, Red Hat delivered on a range of roadmap commitments, especially for CPU support, drivers, virtualization, and package updates/upgrades. RHEL 5 offers a fully integrated server virtualization capability, an application development environment (with toolsets, debuggers and profilers), and SELinux support for Multi Level Security (MLS). Pre-built paravirtualized guest OSes are a nice touch. Windows and Unix interoperability are greatly improved. Overall, it is a solid choice for mainstream computing.
RHEL 5 subscriptions range from $80 to $2,499 depending on the specific product and the selected support level. Volume discounts are available.
