SAN FRANCISCO -- Open source database developer MySQL AB of Sweden announced this week at LinuxWorld Conference and Expo that it has built a version of its product for IBM's Power processors.

MySQL now supports Linux on the pSeries (p5), iSeries (i5) and JS20 BladeCenter systems.

IBM's Power 5 series supports 64-bit applications, and includes logical partitions, a shared 32- and 64-bit environment and other enterprise-class features. It supports major Linux distributions, Windows, AIX and other Unix OSes.

MySQL database is available free under the GNU General Public License, and under a commercial license from MySQL.

Ingres database available under CA open source license

Computer Associates International, Inc., announced this week that its Ingres r3 database is available as open source under the CA Trusted Open Source License.

CA said the CATOSL is compliant with the Open Source Initiative. CA said it will also support Ingres r3, including indemnification, for a fee.

Ingres r3 features include high availability clusters, scalable database clusters, table portioning and indexing, parallel query processing, online table and index reorganization, support for 64-bit environments, and Unicode support.

CA also announced the Ingres Million Dollar Challenge, an offer to the open source community to develop migration toolkits for Ingres r3. Open source developers are challenged to create software that simplifies migration from Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, Sybase Adaptive Enterprise Server, IBM DB2, Informix and MySQL to Ingres r3.

CA said the toolkits will be eligible for cash prizes up to $400,000. The total purse is $1 million.

Entries may be submitted until Feb. 1. Five winners will be announced at CA's annual user conference CA World in April.

Only open source community members who are legal residents of the United States, Canada, Mexico, United Kingdom, India, China, Australia and New Zealand are eligible.
