SWsoft supports Red Hat, adds Linux support to VPS technology

Automation and enterprise server software provider SWsoft Inc. announced Plesk 6 control panel software for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 2.1. Hosting service providers and business partners would use Plesk 6 to install and manage servers running Red Hat. The agreement also calls for SWsoft to provide long-term support for Red Hat Enterprise 2.1 and develop the software to integrate with the Red Hat Enterprise Network.

Also, SWsoft announced enhanced support for Linux on its Virtuozzo 2.5.1 virtual private server technology. The product now supports more than 5,000 instances of Linux on x86 Intel servers. At an IBM testing lab, Virtuozzo 2.5.1 allowed each VPS to scale up to 16 CPUs and 64GB of RAM, SWsoft said.

Irish university selects open source antivirus protection

Central Command announced that the University of Dublin, Trinity College, has selected Vexira antivirus to secure its e-mail infrastructure. Vexira is a Linux-based antivirus product for enterprises. Vexira scans inbound and outbound e-mail and uses a heuristic engine to detect malicious code. It also includes full automatic updates of its scan engine and virus definition file. Vexira Antivirus for Mail servers starts at $199.95.

OpenLink database access suite supports Linux

OpenLink Software, Inc., a developer of secure database connectivity middleware, announced its Universal Data Access Suite, Release 5.1 for Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, FreeBSD, and Unix. The release extends the suite of OpenLink data access drivers to include Managed .NET Data Providers, alongside the existing ODBC, JDBC, and OLE-DB drivers. Release 5.1 adds full Unicode and Rendezvous support to the Multi-Tier edition of the ODBC Data Access Drivers Suite, while expanding backend database support to include legacy and latest releases of Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, IBM DB/2, Informix, Sybase Adaptive Server, Progress, MySQL, PostgreSQL, and other ODBC or JDBC accessible databases.

SuSE release targets SMBs

SuSE Linux AG, Nuremberg, Germany, released SuSE Linux Standard Server 8 for small and medium-sized businesses. The server supports Intel and AMD 32-bit processors up to two CPUs. It features Internet access, e-mail, file and print services, graphical configuration wizards enabling SMBs to use the server as a domain controller, file and print server in Windows environments. The server will be available early next month for $449 and includes the software, documentation, installation support and one year in the SuSE Maintenance Program for one server with up to two CPUs.
