It appears the economic recession has served open source market quite well. Worldwide revenue from open source software (OSS) will grow at a 22.4% compound annual growth rate to reach $8.1 billion by 2013, up considerably from last year, according to the IDC's Worldwide Open Source Software 2009–2013 Forecast.

The uptick stems in part from large software vendors like IBM, Sun, Dell, HP, and Oracle emphasizing and supporting open source support of OSS, which helps main stream adoption.

The IDC also found that hybrid business models are on the rise along with new ways to use open source software for competitive advantages, such as a part of BPO offerings or as a part of a software appliance.
