ORLANDO -- At JBoss World on Tuesday, IT managers struggling to manage the infrastructure of massive Web sites won a pledge to make their work lives easier.

Hyperic HQ includes Nagios, MySQL support

Red Hat and the Web infrastructure management company Hyperic officially launched the RHQ project . The project aims to create a common management platform that combines the strengths of Red Hat's operating system, the JBoss Application Server and Hyperic remote monitoring systems to identify and remedy Web site "plumbing" problems. The jointly developed code, which will become the foundation of future products by both companies, will facilitate the management of massive Web sites with better integration, additional plug-ins, agent technology and other tools.

Based on General Public License open source code, the jointly developed code has been named JBoss Operations Network 2.0. It is due for release this spring following input from Red Hat's and Hyperic's respective communities.

Announced last November, the RHQ project is the result of three years of collaboration, said Katrina McCallum, Red Hat's vice president of the Management Business Unit.

To date, most of Red Hat's work has centered on the task of adding depth to its operating system; in contrast, this effort expands its breadth with interoperability and linkages to other IT systems, McCallum said. The RHQ project also builds on Red Hat's automation strategy of "anywhere, anytime" functionality by enabling administrators to migrate applications from one server to another for maintenance or other reasons, she said.

Hyperic's complementary expertise, on the other hand, is monitoring and managing Web sites, with all the alerts, analytics and performance metrics to keep sites up and running and the plug-ins to give customers visibility and control, said Paul Melmon, Hyperic's senior vice president of engineering. .

Essentially, Hyperic enables users to manage exceptions and focus on other Web site concerns, added Stacey Schneider, Hyperic's senior marketing director. To date, Hyperic management tools include inventory and autodiscovery, data collection, configuration management, event management, alerting and provisioning.
