Several vendors took advantage of the limelight cast by the LinuxWorld Open Solutions Summit this week to announce a series of products and services. SearchOpenSource.com wandered the show floor on Wednesday to get a flavor for what's new in Linux and open source.

Hyperic drops version 3.0 of flagship software

Hyperic Inc. announced the immediate availability of Hyperic HQ 3.0, the company's flagship software.

Major additions to version 3.0 include:

• Operations dashboard: centralized, web-based portal with real-time and historical trending information on the general health of entire infrastructure.
• System alerts: alert escalation, alert acknowledgement, and the ability to initiate RSS response actions.
• Event analysis: historical and real-time information from any log resource, configuration file, or security module that can be correlated with availability, utilization and performance.
• Corrective control: IT managers can describe and execute product-specific control actions directly through the portal.

Tresys Technology releases SETools 3.1

The Columbia Md.-based Tresys Technologies announced an update to its SELinux tool suite on Feb 8, and executives were on hand at LinuxWorld to explain how it could help users secure their data centers.

At the show, SearchOpenSource.com associate editor Mimi Yeh caught up with SELinux by Example author and Tresys president Frank Maher to discuss his progress with SELinux. Maher said the new toolset will help analyze debugging policies and is already built into Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4. The toolset will be built into RHEL5 when that launches in March.

SELinux is a set of system security rules that allows users to configure Linux or a variety of security applications.

SpikeSource jives with new partners

Open source software stack certifier SpikeSource Inc. was busy this week with three partnership-related announcements.

First, SpikeSource partnered with Canonical, the commercial sponsor of Ubuntu Linux. Under the partnership, SpikeSource will certify its open source applications for Ubuntu and deliver support for the Ubuntu distribution through its channel of application providers.

SpikeSource will also certify, integrate, resell and support Jive Software's Wildfire Instant Messaging Platform.

Finally, SpikeSource has reached an agreement with Hyperic to certify and resell its open source systems management platform called Hyperic HQ. Customers will be able to install, monitor, manage and extend IT infrastructure with SpikeSource's update service as well as with Hyperic HQ.
