Symark announced that its Linux security software has been certified by the Red Hat Ready Program, leading off this edition of Quick Takes. Also included are items from 724 Solutions, NetIQ, Dell, SGI and IBM and Reuters.

Symark security software certified Red Hat Ready

Linux security vendor Symark announced that its Symark PowerBroker and Symark PowerPassword software have been certified by the Red Hat Ready Program. A Symark representative said the software enables enterprises to meet regulation like Sarbanes-Oxley, HIPAA and GLBA. PowerBroker delegates administrative privileges and restricts root account access. PowerPassword is login and password policy management software that demands strong passwords and history and audit trails.

X-treme Mobility Gateway available for Linux

IP-based network, application and services provider 724 Solutions announced that its X-treme Mobility Gateway (XMG) is available on Linux. XMG is a WAP 2.0 [wireless application protocol], open source fault-tolerant gateway that also operates on HP-UX and Solaris. Network administrators can maintain stateful processes on the Unix backend systems and deploy Linux for front-end processes to cut costs. XMG also includes security measures that focus on authentication, access rights and privacy.

NetIQ announces new Linux modules

NetIQ Corp. recently announced two new Linux-based modules for its NetIQ AppManager Suite, AppManager for Oracle RDBMS and AppManager for Oracle Application Server. Both modules are available for Red Hat Linux environments. AppManager monitors, does diagnostics, reporting, analysis and automation for Linux, Windows and Unix systems through a Web console. The AppManager modules for Linux are shipping now with prices starting at $750 per server.

Dell offering Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 upgrades

Dell announced that its customers can buy or upgrade to Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 for Dell PowerEdge servers and Precision workstations. Dell customers can also buy Red Hat training and certification from Dell. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 was released last week and features larger memory configurations and better threading and security features. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 is available on three servers from Red Hat: Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 Advanced Server, Enterprise Server and Workstation Server. Dell customers already subscribed to the Red Hat Network or who order Red Hat Enterprise Linux 2.1 from Dell can immediately upgrade to Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 at no additional cost. Dell said it will factory install Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 on Dell PowerEdge servers in February 2004 and on select Dell Precision workstations in November 2003.

SGI Altix on Linux breaks records

SGI recently announced that a 256-processor Linux-based global shared-memory SGI Altix 3000 system set a performance and scalability benchmark on scientific applications. The benchmarks were set at the NASA Ames Research Center. The benchmarks include production computational fluid dynamics (CFD) codes, ocean and atmospheric circulation models, numerical analysis and other mission-relevant applications at NASA.

IBM, Reuters support financials on eServers and Linux

IBM Corp. announced that Reuters Market Data System will be supported on the IBM eServer xSeries and eServer BladeCenter running on Linux. RMDS is a software platform for the integration of financial market data. A Linux-based version of RMDS has been available since March. RMDS aggregates and distributes market-related data.
