Can I use open source software applications in a Windows database and network environment? What are the advantages and disadvantages of doing this? We're running some open source monitoring tools on our Linux Web platform, and they're working well.

Sure you can! Both PostgreSQL and MySQL can be used with Windows 32-bit ODBC drivers that can be downloaded from the Web sites for the respective SQL servers. Performance of both is very good. PostgreSQL permits most MS Access databases to be migrated to its backend with little or no change to the MS Access application. This is a great way to improve multi-user database access also.
