QUESTION POSED ON: 08 May 2003
If one uses Novell (we use 5.0) only as a file and print server, what is the best/easiest/fastest way to port the file and print systems to Samba? What are the pros and cons of doing so?

>
You could use the NetWare migration tools that NT4/2K provides to migrate directly to a Samba share. Alternatively, one could just copy the files accross from an MS Windows client from the NetWare volume to a Samba share.

One other way to migrate the files would be to install the Samba NetWare NLM, and then copy the files using smbfs from the Samba server (if it is running Linux).

In all cases, it would be necessary to make certain that the files and directories created on the Samba server offer correct access control permissions for your users.

What are the pros and cons of doing so? That's a tough one! I'd set up a test bench and check this. It has been a long time since I migrated any NetWare systems to Samba.
