QUESTION POSED ON: 30 January 2006
I'm planning to upgrade my servers which use Red Hat Linux 9. Do I really need to buy RHEL 4 or would I run into problems if I go with Debian, which would be cheaper? I'm already using a local consultant for RH support, and he could support Debian, too.

Clearly, it's more difficult to get cheaper support than free. However, if your local consultant were to become unavailable for some reason, would you be able to find an alternate source for Debian support? Research a fall back plan before committing to Debian.

Also, consider that RHEL3 is much closer to Red Hat 9 in terms of versions of software. A transition to RHEL3 may be easier than a transition to RHEL4. But RHEL4, being the newer OS, will be supported for a longer period of time. Lastly, you may be able to work out a discount with Red Hat if you purchased your Red Hat 9 licenses and had them on support at one time. If no credit is available for your Red Hat 9 licenses, be sure to ask about quantity discounts for the number of servers you will have.
