There are several useful Linux Web sites that discuss Linux clustering and load-balancing software, including the Linux-HA Project Web Site (http://www.linux-ha.org/). This site provides detailed information on a variety of Linux fail-over and clustering technologies.
There is also a good Web site on the Linux SSI project at http://ssic-linux.sourceforge.net/, though much of this software is still in development.
The company I am affiliated with, Sistina Software, also offers several papers on shared data solutions that might help you with your research. These can be found at the following Web page: http://www.sistina.com/resources_whtpapers.html.
Other companies working on data sharing technology for clusters include IBM, ADIC and SGI.
