QUESTION POSED ON: 23 March 2009
We wanted to install Nagios for one of our clients to monitor around 200 Network devices, 200 Windows boxes and 200 Solaris/Unix/Linux boxes. We wanted to install it on Linux. My question regards that on some servers they say:

Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS release 4 (Nahant Update 4) and N & S setup - Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5 (Tikanga)

But, what is Nahant and Tikanga?

I want to know what are Linux OS versions and on which hardware they can be installed. Also, please recommend the hardware and OS recommendation for installing Nagios for our environment

Regarding Nahant and Tikanga - they are just code names for the Red Hat releases. Red Hat is not the only one that does this – Fichte is the code name for openSUSE. Debian has code names named after Toy story characters. Regarding the hardware – for all practical purposes, the only requirement of running Nagios, is a Linux (or Unix) box and a C compiler. Nagios will run on all the popular Linux distributions - so you don't need to concern yourself with a specific flavor of distribution. CPU requirements are minimal and you should not have a problem with any kind of x86 hardware. I would get at least a quad-core with 2 GB Ram and plenty of disk. You should also know that Nagious offers many support options, from phone, to email, to on-line to on-site support and custimized programs programs as well.
