QUESTION POSED ON: 08 July 2007
I am using Oxygen Office Professional 2.0.4 on a Win98SE computer. When I try to email a document from the file menu in OOOP's Writer, I get a message that it cannot locate a working email client on my computer, although I am using Outlook Express 6. Is there some plug-in or file I can put in the OOOP directory to engage the email function?

Also, I am using OOOP because they include many more templates and extras. With each new stable version of OpenOffice, I want to upgrade, but am fearful that all my templates and extras will not be there. It's just too much work to install them again! How can I be certain that my original OOOP install will be kept intact if I try to upgrade to the newest version of OO or OOOP, or for my minor use of any office software? Shouldl I just be content with my perfectly working OOOP 2.0.4?

You can try choosing Tools > Options > OpenOffice.org Writer > Mail Merge Email and specify the correct email settings in that window. The email settings will depend on your email setup. You can also go into the Windows control panel and find the icon for Internet. Then, in the window that that icon opens, look for a tab that says Programs or Default Programs. Select your email program as your default email program, and click OK.

Regarding the templates, this depends on your operating system. On my Windows computer, templates are stored in an Application Data directory outside of any OpenOffice.org directory, so you'll be able to access them from each new installation in the same way. Or just copy all your templates to a directory like C:myopenofficetemplates. Then, under Tools > Options > OpenOffice.org > Paths, Template item, just point to your template directory each time you install a new version.
