Definition

Common Desktop Environment (CDE)

The Common Desktop Environment (CDE) is a standardized graphical user interface (GUI) for open systems. CDE and similar interfaces, such as KDE, offer a more intuitive and user-friendly way to interact with the operating system than the command line interface traditionally included with open systems. In addition to familiar GUI features, CDE offers more advanced capabilities, such as collaborative work spaces and desktop access to system and network resources. CDE was developed by The Open Group.
