One great way of doing this is deploying a Security Information Management (SIM) solution to integrate all data from open source tools into a single central location for analysis and correlation. SIM solutions collect various logs, alerts and security related messages and correlate and analyze them. Many SIMs will automatically categorize and verify IDS alerts (such as those from Snort, etc).
