Pop-up and ad prevention with open source browsers

Would an open source desktop not show any ads at all or have pop-ups?

Linux desktops generally are not plagued by spyware and the like. I associate pop-ups with browsers rather than operating systems. Assuming you use Firefox, you can configure it to block pop-ups. In fact, you can configure it to block most but to allow specific pop-ups so that you can use certain websites that make use of pop-ups.
