We are using the open source software model to create free business guidance, in this case, for very small businesses under the GNU-FDL. What, in your opinion, is the current state of open source documentation, methodologies and guidance?

think the effort sounds very interesting. Certainly, open source needs a fuller set of surrounding capabilities as it makes its way into mainstream IT organizations. I suggest you take a look at the Open Source Maturity Model (OSMM), which I developed to help organizations assess open source products. It has a section on open source documentation. You can download a whitepaper on the OSMM here.
