'Error occurred during initialization of VM' while installing Oracle 9i on RHEL

I got the following error while installing Oracle 9i release 2 on Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 3.0:

Error occurred during initialization of VM
Unable to load native library:
/tmp/OraInstall2003-07-27_06-20-30PM/jre/lib/i386/libjava.so:
symbol __libc_wait, version GLIBC_2.0 not defined in file libc.so.6
with link time reference

I tried your solution, but I didn't find file /etc/ld.so.preload. I didn't apply any patch. Please help me out.

It sounds like this file got corrupted; it should be there. Try restoring from a backup, or from your CDs.
