Eliminating steps in exporting data from Base

I have found the following article, "Exporting data from an OpenOffice.org Base database," really interesting. However, I think there is an odd step within it. Why should I go to Writer to cut and paste in Calc, when I could just as easily import the data straight from Base to Calc?

I have tried several times to go from Base to Calc but it doesn't work in 2.02 or 2.1. I only get a single piece of data, or a data entry field. If importing the data straight from Base to Calc works for you, then great!
